Patio, Pool Deck and Lanai Cleaning in Brunswick and St. Simons Island, GA

From April to October, your pool deck gets the most use of any spot at a Glynn County home. It is also the most likely surface to make you slip and land on your back.

Green slime grows on pavers, travertine, and concrete from shade, dampness, and splashed pool water. Lanai screens get covered in grey fuzz from all the moisture. At Atlantic Coastal Cleaning, we wash pool decks, porches, patios, and screened lanais in Sea Island, St. Simons Island, and Brunswick. We match our washing method to each specific surface so we never chip concrete, tear screens, or etch stone. Call us at (912) 571-0639 for a free quote.

Pool decks: concrete, pavers, travertine, cool deck

Four surfaces, four different jobs.

Broom finished concrete

This surface is the toughest of the four, so we can use a rotary surface cleaner on it. We pre-treat it first with a solution that kills the algae deep in the texture. Then we wash the slab evenly. That way, you do not get those ugly wand stripes.

Pavers

We use lower pressure here to keep the joint sand in place. Algae lives inside the joints, so our pre-treatment solution matters much more than high water pressure. We keep our nozzle moving. We never dig into the joints.

Travertine

On the islands, this soft, porous stone is common around the newer pools. It cannot handle high pressure or acid cleaners. We give it the gentlest treatment on the property. We apply the solution, let it sit, and rinse with low pressure and a wide fan nozzle.

Cool deck

While textured cement coating keeps the surface cooler underfoot, it is brittle. High pressure chips it, and those chips do not come back. We treat cool deck like painted siding. We use our soft wash method and a rinse instead of a surface cleaner.

If you do not know which surface you have, send us a photo. We can also look at it when we visit. Our quote will name the exact surface and how we plan to wash it so there are no surprises.

Screen enclosures and lanais: low pressure only

A pool cage or screened lanai is only fiberglass screen stretched over an aluminum frame. That screen collects pollen, salt, and mildew. It turns from black to grey, and then green. If you hit it with high pressure, the screen tears or the spline pops right out of the frame.

Our method for screens is the same way we clean houses. First, we apply the soft wash method we use on houses under low pressure. We let it sit for a few minutes and then give it a gentle rinse from both the inside and outside. The mildew lifts off, the screen goes back to black, and we wipe down the frame. We also clean the concrete or pavers under the lanai during that same visit.

Front patios and porches

Porches in Windsor Park, Country Club Estates, and Old Town Brunswick get the exact same careful treatment as pool decks. We look at what the surface actually is. Brick porches get a low-pressure rinse to keep the mortar intact. Painted concrete gets soft washed because high pressure strips the paint right off. We move your planters, rugs, and outdoor chairs out of the way and set them back down once things dry.

Old Town is the oldest neighborhood in Brunswick. Its street grid goes back to the 1771 original plan, much like Savannah, and the entire district was put on the National Register in 1979. Most homes here were built starting in the 1880s. That means Victorian porches made with soft brick piers, lime mortar, and heart pine boards. Some front sidewalks still have those historic hexagonal stone tiles. High pressure ruins all of this by washing out mortar joints, raising pine fur, and permanently scouring the stone. We dial the pressure way down on these properties and let our solution do the work. It takes more time, but it is the only way these materials survive.

Slippery algae around pools

That pool algae is identical to driveway slime, and it turns dangerously slick when wet. It spreads the fastest in the shade past noon, under pool cages, and on the north side of a house. Our pre-treatment kills the roots, and washing lifts the growth. This delays its return far beyond a month. Keeping the pool deck clean between rentals is the easiest way for property owners to prevent slip injuries.

What we keep out of the pool

We care about your pool water safety. We apply the cleaning solution straight onto the deck, stay away from the pool itself, and rinse away from the water whenever the slope lets us. Any overspray matches the chlorine base of your pool, but we still try to keep it out completely. We soak nearby plants with clean water before we start and rinse them again when we finish. If you have a pool cover, pull it over, or you can just skim the surface quickly when we are done.

Pool decks on the islands

Decks on the islands turn green the fastest. On St. Simons, the pool cages sitting under the oaks in Sea Palms and along the Frederica Road corridor stay damp all year round. Travertine near East Beach holds salt and algae deep in every pore around those newer pools. Most weeks find us working on the island. Read more about pool decks on St. Simons Island to see how we handle them.

For driveways and walkways, check out our concrete driveway washing page. We put both of those jobs under the pressure washing side of what we do. Wooden pool decks and pool fences require a different cleaning method, which you can see on our wood deck cleaning page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will pressure washing damage my travertine or my cool deck?

High pressure can damage them, so we do not use it on either one. We clean travertine and cool deck with our soft wash method: we apply a cleaning solution, let it sit, and rinse with low pressure. Concrete and pavers can handle real pressure, so we use it there.

Can you clean the screen on my lanai without tearing it?

Yes, we do. We clean screens with low pressure and a cleaning solution, never a pressure wand. The mildew and pollen lift right off and the screen goes back to black.

Do I need to drain or cover the pool?

There is no need to drain your pool. A cover helps if you have one. We keep our cleaning solution on the deck and rinse away from the pool, then a quick skim after we finish handles anything that drifts into the water.

How often should a pool deck be cleaned in coastal Georgia?

Once a year is enough for most decks. If you have heavy shade or a screen enclosure, they trap moisture and keep the deck wet. Those will need attention every eight or nine months.

Can you clean the deck while the pool is in use for the season?

We recommend doing this in the spring, right before swimming season kicks off. If summer is already here, we can easily work around your schedule.
