Can You Clean Your Own Windows on the Georgia Coast?

Yes, a lot of them. Here's what works on the salt film we get here, what doesn't, and where we'd tell anyone to put the ladder down.

We clean windows for a living, so take this for what it is. But the ground-floor glass on most houses is a Saturday job, and there's no reason to pay us for it if you'd rather do it yourself.

Salt film is the problem here

Near the water, spray blows in, dries on the glass and leaves a thin salty haze. Humidity then glues pollen and dust to it. That's why island and marsh-front windows look foggy again a few weeks after you clean them, and why store-bought spray just smears it around.

What works is plenty of clean water first to loosen the salt, then a mild wash, then a squeegee. A little dish soap in a bucket handles ordinary grime. Rinse before you wash, not after, or you're scrubbing salt across the glass.

Hard-water spots are a different problem

White spots from the sprinklers aren't salt. They're minerals left behind when irrigation water dries on the glass (the USGS explains what makes water hard). Fresh spots often come off with a normal clean. Old ones can etch into the glass, and nothing fully removes those.

The fix is upstream: turn the sprinkler heads away from the house. The EPA's WaterSense outdoor tips cover pointing sprinklers at the lawn instead of the walls.

Why your windows streak

Usually it's too much cleaner, a dirty cloth, or glass drying faster than you can work it. Do the shady side of the house first and leave the sunny side for later in the day.

Where DIY should stop

Ground floor, from the ground: go for it. The windows that make a house look sharp are the ones over the porch roof, above the garage and on the second and third floor. Those are also the ones people fall off ladders reaching for.

Skylights and rooftop glass are the same story. "Hard to reach windows ain't got nothin on us" was one of our posts back in 2023, and it's still the most common reason people call. Marsh-side windows on St. Simons are a regular job for us too.

Inside is easier, but big furniture tends to be in the way. Google reviewers have mentioned us moving heavy furniture to get to the glass, and we're happy to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Dawn or vinegar on my windows?

A little dish soap in water is fine for ordinary dirt. Either way, rinse salt film off with plenty of water first.

How often do coastal windows need cleaning?

Island and waterfront homes usually want the outside done two to four times a year. Inland Brunswick homes can go longer.

Will cleaning remove sprinkler spots?

Fresh ones, usually. Old spots that have etched into the glass won't come out, and we'll tell you before we start.
